Niantic is finally increasing the Pokemon Go level cap from the establshed Level 50 all the way up to Level 80.

After years of waiting, the popular Pokemon mobile game will increase its level cap in a bit to rebalance the entire game. Following massive expansions in content, players have been waiting for the game to increase, and Niantic is finally acting.

This change will only apply to Trainer Levels, your individual character, not the levels of your Pokemon. Instead, these will stay capped at Level 50.

The new Level Cap will apply on October 15th, and existing players may see a large jump in XP during that time if they’ve already hit the game’s peak.

Additionally, Niantic is introducing a new XP Celebration event that will last from 25th August until 14th October to help players rapidly level up.

The event includes the following bonuses:

  • Level-Up Research update for level 48 – now reduced from walking 25km eight times in a week to twice in a week
  • 2x Catch XP from Nice, Great, and Excellent throws
  • +3000 XP for winning raids
  • +3000 XP for winning Max Battles

As Niantic continues to rebalance the game, the developer is removing Level Up Research tasks for levels 41 to 50 will be removed. Additionally, new tasks will be introduced for levels 71 to 80 with trainers above level 70 or higher having an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends with other players.

Unfortunately, Niantic is also removing certain rewards tied to the prior level cap for new players. For example, the Level 50 jacket will no longer be obtainable as well as avatar items that were earned for reaching levels 40 to 50.
