The launch of Resident Evil Requiem has been an absolutely massive success for Capcom. While the series has always been popular for its genre, the ninth mainline entry in the series may be its most popular entry yet.
Alongside massive sales with a massive Steam concurrent peak of over 343,000 players, Resident Evil Requiem has also dominated critic aggregate website Metacritic since launch. At the time of writing, the new horror-action game has already become the highest-rated game of all time on the platform.
While the game’s critic Metacritic score sits at a very high rating of 88/100, the user score rating current stands at a massive 9.5/10. This makes the game not only the best-rated horror game on the platform by a significant margin, but the best-rated game of all time, beating out Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Of course, the user score rating on Metacritic isn’t the ultimate test of quality with Disney’s 2008 Cory in the House game for Nintendo DS still sitting as the third high-rated game on the platform. However, the rest of the highest-rated games on the list are critically acclaimed games including Metal Gear Solid and Chrono Trigger.
Additionally, Resident Evil Requiem is the highest-rated horror game on the platform, albeit not the only one in the best-rated games of all time according to user score. While Requiem is the only Resi game in the list, it sits alongside Silent Hill 2 and its Restless Dreams port on the Original Xbox.
Resident Evil 9 Requiem does also benefit from recency bias with many players rushing to support the game after just minutes of release. Time will tell if the game will stay on the top-rated games list, but considering the game’s rampant popularity, it will likely stay in the top ten for many, many years.
