The ever-brilliant SEGA Dreamcast MMO Phantasy Star Online is now completely playable within a standard web browser with both desktop and mobile support.

Released at the turn of the millennium, Sonic Team’s Phantasy Star Online is a phenomenal early MMO that fans are still playing to this day. Fans have created custom servers for original console versions, and there are even fully fan-build custom launchers to bring the retro game to modern PCs and Android.

In an impressive turn of events, fans have now created a browser-based client for Phantasy Star Online that requires no downloads whatsoever. Dubbed PSO Reborn, playable here, this new browser client allows players to experience all of Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2 without installing anything.

Through the PSO Reborn client, you can play the MMO in both single-player or multi-player. The single-player version of the game appears to save to your web browser’s cache, although you can also create an account for playing the online version of the MMO.

One of the best features of this web-based version of the game is its dynamic aspect ratio. Playable across desktop and mobile, the client automatically adapts to the aspect ratio of your window, moving and shrinking the UI to accommodate your specific screen, or the size of your browser window. It’s incredibly intuitive.

26 years after its release, the original Phantasy Star Online is still a fantastic MMO, and that’s not just nostalgia talking. While it may have been the first true console RPG, the game’s bite-sized dungeons are still phenomenally satisfying, and it’s simple-but-satisfying combat system still feels rewarding to this day.

As many fans will tell you, there’s an addictive rhythm to the pacing of PSO’s combat that still makes it feel amazing to this day. The MMO also has a dedicated community—one that will actually help you when you return after 15 years and need help remembering everything—and that’s why it’s been ported and supported by fans for so long.

While the release of yet another way to play Phantasy Star Online is fantastic, it would be nice if SEGA would also officially support the MMO with new ports to modern hardware. There’s a very active playerbase for a 26-year-old MMO, and this would be a perfect fit for Nintendo Switch, but the game hasn’t seen an official release since the original Xbox in mid-2003.
