Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the most successful 40K game of all time. With a sequel on the way promising to go “bigger and better”, the game has made a host of new Warhammer fans, both diehard and casual.
However, Saber Interactive chief of development Tim Willits explains that the game’s gargantuan success has caused some annoying assumptions to be made by some of the more casual fans of the game.
As a game that focuses on small elements of an extraordinarily vast universe, Willits explains that many fans who have talked to him simply don’t understand the wealth of factions available in Warhammer 40,000.
For example, the game focuses on Ultramarines, the iconic blue Space Marines that are just one legion of the original twenty Space Marine factions. Due to the game’s use of this chapter, some assume that they are the de facto good guys.
Willits’ biggest issue is the assumptions regarding Chaos. With the game focusing on the Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marines, some assume that they’re just what Chaos is. In reality, there’s a lot more to Chaos than what Space Marine 2 shows.
“I heard that lots of people now think that gThousand Sons are the only Chaos faction because that’s what we had in the game,” Willits said in an interview with IGN. “And so people are like, ‘Oh, I guess Thousand Sons, they’re Chaos.’ It’s like, ‘Actually no it’s not.’ They’re actually just a small faction. But people are just like, ‘That’s the one I played against.’”
“That is kind of humorous,” he continued. “And like, ‘Oh Space Marines are only blue!’ That has been quite humorous to be honest, which is good for us.”
Games Workshop’s grim dark universe is far more vast than any one video game can handle. Even the upcoming RTS Dawn of War 4 which boasts four entire armies (Blood Ravens, Necrons, Orks and Adeptus Mechanicus) can’t possibly showcase the universe in its entirety.
Nevertheless, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been gigantic for the success of Games Workshop’s beloved franchise. While some may be unwilling to learn exactly what is what, it’s introduced a lot of people to one of the best sci-fi universes ever made.
