Valve’s brand-new PC-focused Steam Controller won’t be re-stocked until 2027 following the massive unexpected demand from fans.
Originally planned to launch alongside the still-upcoming Steam Machine, the new Steam Controller is a massive improvement over its predecessor. Alongside revised haptics and touchpads, the controller has been dubbed the ultimate option for those gaming on PC.
Right now, the Steam Controller is already out of stock. The £85/$99 controller sold out in just 30 minutes with Valve massively underestimating the demand for its new device. (This does come after the original controller which infamously sold poorly for years before it was discontinued.)
At the time of writing, you can now sign up for a spot in the Steam Controller order queue system which will give you three spaces to grab your device. If you’ve already signed up, you’ll likely be able to get your controller in either September 2026 or December 2026. However, any late comers will likely be waiting until next year.
The final window on display for the Steam Controller is simply marked “2027” with no specific release period for the device. Valve explains that it has “no plans to stop making” the controller, but the current demand has massively exceeded their internal estimations.
“As we look at the current demand compared to how many we know we can make by the end of the year, we want to manage expectations as much as we can with regards to when folks can expect to receive their order,” Valve said.
The new reservation system has been designed to “cut down on the headaches on the customer side”, and it may not be the last time we see this system this year. Alongside the new controller, Valve is releasing the Steam Machine this year, despite its issues in securing RAM for the console-like PC, as well as its VR Steam Frame headset.
Additionally, Valve is continuing to sell out of its Linux-powered PC gaming handheld, Steam Deck, despite massive price hikes. Outside of maybe the Steam Frame, considering the current state of the VR gaming market, Valve will likely sell out of its entire hardware line later this year.
