Capcom’s been on a roll with Resident Evil for the past decade, and that roll continues with Resident Evil: Veronica. Launching next year, the remake of Code Veronica will put players back in the shoes of Claire Redfield, exclusively in a third-person view.

After Resident Evil Requiem launched with options for both first and third-person gameplay, many assumed that Capcom would do the same for this new remake. However, the studio has confirmed that the game will only be available in third-person.

Speaking in a Q&A to press following the game’s reveal at Summer Games Fest, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that the “game will be a third-person game”. Similar to Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4’s remakes, players will not have the option to jump into first-person.

“The team behind this remake is the same team that handled the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes,” the producer said. (Thanks, IGN.) “So if you looked at the past remakes that this team has created, you can probably sense a certain mindset that we have when we make a game, and that mindset includes preserving those iconic and key aspects of the title.”

While new Resident Evil games can play with perspective as much as they like, there does seem to be a push to keep the remakes in line with their original counterparts. While fans have modded first-person options into the remakes on PC, and even brought them into VR, they were designed to replicate the third-person gameplay of their original versions.

With that said, it does look like there might be first-person cinematic sequences within Resident Evil: Veronica. Despite the gameplay taking place exclusively in third-person, the game’s reveal was set entirely in first-person as Claire Redfield arrived at a rather filthy house in Paris and woke up on Rockfort Prison Island. It’s easy to see why some fans were confused.

While Code Veronica isn’t the most action-focused game in the series, it’s certainly more action-focused than the original trilogy. For example, the game includes the dodging from Resi 3 as well as giving players the option to target multiple enemies with weapons like the akimbo SMGs.

Code Veronica was one of two remake projects that was leaked last year. According to insiders, the upcoming Resident Evil: Veronica is in development alongside a second remake of the original game, although this hasn’t officially been announced.
