Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is almost over. Following the release of the first two games, the same team is working on the third and final entry of the lavish redux trilogy.
With development reportedly proceeding well, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi, it might only be a couple of years until the new game releases. This time targeting a multi-platform launch, Hamaguchi has confirmed that the game will not be cutting any content from the original, although the pacing will be better than the bloated second entry.
But what happens after the finale of Final Fantasy 7 Remake? In an interview with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi explained that the team responsible for the trilogy will work on another project, and the best part is that they should all stick together to make something great.
“I think once we have got out the third game in the series, and hopefully it’s a big success,” the director said, “We’ll definitely move on to something else, and it’d be great to see what that team that we’ve managed to build up together produces. I don’t know if it’s the right way of talking about it, but the bonds, the relationship between the team has definitely improved a lot and strengthened that team.”
While the director explained that the team will remain together for a new project, Hamaguchi explained that they “can’t say at this point what that’s going to be”, obviously keeping the team’s next major release tightly under wraps.
Hamaguchi explained that it’s not decided “whether it’s going to be a completely new game, completely new IP, whether it’s gonna be something new within the Final Fantasy series, but I’m really looking forward to it.”
“I think fans who’ve seen what our work has been on the Remake series, the three games, will really look forward to this exciting, new gameplay experience,” he continued. “What we work on after that, I’m very much looking forward to working on that myself as well.”
Despite a couple of missteps here and there, the team’s work on bringing Final Fantasy 7 back with as much cinematic flair as possible has been a treat for fans of the original. As someone who struggled to connect with Final Fantasy after the release of XIII, and was heavily disappointed by the release of XV, the redux of the most famous game in the series has been a marvel to behold.
Hopefully, the team behind the project can work on a completely original Final Fantasy game in the future. Either that, or that alleged Final Fantasy 6 remake might be coming sooner than expected.
