Announced during the 2025 annual Game Awards, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a brand-new adventure set during the titular Old Republic era.

In development at KOTOR creator Casey Hudson’s Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucaasfilm Games, the new role-playing game is a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic that will release firmly as a canon entry in the long-running franchise.

Announced via a teaser trailer, the new RPG aims to recapture the old BioWare feeling of choice and consequences where your decisions throughout the game world actually matter. While CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Owlcat’s Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader thrive on a high level of choice, few modern AAA titles do.

In an interview with the official Star Wars website, Hudson said that the new game aims to be a “ definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

General Manager of Lucasilm Games Douglas Reilly revealed that the new game focuses on the “same tradition of a deep, cinematic, choice-driven role-playing game” that fans saw with KOTOR back in the early 2000s.

As for the return to The Old Republic era of storytelling—an era that was annoying largely stripped from canon when Disney acquired Lucasilm—Reilly explains that the franchise benefits from exploring as many eras as possible. “There are, quite literally, infinite stories to tell. While we will always honor and celebrate the core saga, it’s crucial to explore new territory, meet new characters, and see new parts of the galaxy,” they said.

Unfortunately, it appears we have a very long wait until Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is playable. While the game has been revealed with a very lavish CG trailer, Arcanaut Studios was only founded at the end of last year.

The official Star Wars website reports that the game is “still in the early stages of development and creation” with Casey Hudson confirming that little of the game has been made at the time of reveal.

“We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead,” Hudson said. “I’m grateful to have enjoyed the support of KOTOR fans for many years, and I look forward to embarking upon this journey together, sharing more of what we’re doing as soon as we can!”

Nevertheless, this could be a sign of intention by Lucasfilm that the future of Star Wars may dive heavily into The Old Republic era. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a large amount of The High Republic content—a new era set after The Old Republic which saw the Jedi at the height of power—although its tie-in video game Star Wars: Eclipse is still in development.

Alongisde Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a full remake of the original KOTOR is still in development at Mad Head Games and Saber Interactive. It’s not known if changes are being made to reinsert the story into official Star Wars canon.
