Bethesda Game Studios lead Todd Howard has been wheeled out for the press junket of Fallout Season 2, the just-released continuation of Amazon’s hit TV show. While the iconic game director had little to say about future Fallout games—although we know Fallout 3 Remastered is coming—he did comment on the development of Elder Scrolls 6.
Following comments that The Elder Scrolls 6 will definitely not release before GTA 6, Howard told Game Informer that development on the very-long-awaited RPG is “progressing really well”. Of course, the shadowdrop-loving game director did not reveal when the game will release.
“The majority of the studio’s on 6,” Howard continued, ”but I’ll say this: We always overlap. So, we’re very used to overlapping development. And we have long pre-productions on things so that we feel good about them. And it’s a process.”
The Bethesda lead told the outlet that they “all wish it went a little bit faster – or a lot faster – but it’s a process that we want to get right.”
Alongside Todd Howard, a number of other developers working on the next Elder Scrolls game commented on the game’s state right now. Studio Design Director Emil Pagliarulo explained that Bethesda is going to take “as long as needs to be to be great”, explaining that “games get pushed all the time” to polish systems and fix bugs.
By far the most excited, studio director Angela Browder explained that the “industry and the hardware and all of this have made such huge leaps and bounds since the last time” they made an Elder Scrolls game. While the studio director didn’t reveal any specific details about The Elder Scrolls 6, they teased that “Angela from [the] Skyrim days could never have envisioned seeing this”.
“To me, The Elder Scrolls 6 is this endless set of possibilities that is really, really exciting as a developer, but really, really exciting as someone who really likes to think about how far everything has come in our industry,” they said. “It’s gonna be dope. It’s dope! [laughs]”
At the time of writing, The Elder Scrolls VI isn’t expected until 2027 at the earliest, although it’s not known if the game will release even later than that. Alongside continued updates to Fallout 76 and the studio’s missing-in-action major Starfield update, there is more coming for overall Bethesdsa fans, but Elder Scrolls fans still have a long wait ahead of them.
