Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick believes the publisher’s WWE 2K games should sell “double or triple” as well as they already do.
Take-Two’s annual wrestling game series has consistently been a best-seller, although some years have suffered from, frankly, abysmal releases. In an interview with IGN, Zelnick confirmed that WWE 2K26 is the series’ best-performing game yet, but there’s potential to be even better.
“We’re very proud of Metacritic score, we’re proud of how the title performed,” Zelnick told the outlet, explaining that they “have great partners at TKO”. However, as “everything related to WWE continues to grow” there’s potential for the WWE 2K games to be even bigger with more content and even more sales.
The Take-Two boss pushed that “there’s ongoing opportunities to improve the quality of the game”. While there’s obvious ways to improve the quality of the game, Zelnick explained that there’s also a push for unique mechanics and unexpected additions that will continue to excite fans.
“I do think that we can give consumers more of what they want. And I know our team at Visual Concepts always wants to do better,” the CEO said. “We’re never in the business of patting ourselves on the back. We believe that arrogance is the enemy of continued success. And I think that title could be double or triple the size that it is as long as we delight consumers, and as long as we give them something new and not expected that’s consistent with the brand that they love.”
Of course, WWE 2K27 is currently in development with plans to continue the annual series. Outside of a few blanket failures, the annual sports series has delighted with its consistency and, despite annoying battle pass shenanigans, the series still maintains an extremely dedicated audience.
There is no public release date for the next WWE game. However, considering the fact that the games release on very similar dates every year, we should expect a March 2027 release for the wrestling game. It’s not known what unique features, if any, will be pushed for the next mainline game in the series.
Of course, alongside the continued development of WWE games, Take-Two’s biggest upcoming release is still GTA 6. There’s a lot riding on the upcoming open-world game with the title prepped to be th biggest entertainment launch of all time.
