Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best games ever made in its own right, but with mods players can turn the game into anything they like. While some fans are working on entire custom campaigns, others are creating gorgeous HD texture overhauls for the RPG.
Fans are always working on something, and one BG3 modder has decided to release an extensive fan expansion for the game that brings the vibe of Arthurian legends into Larian’s bold and beautiful turn-based role-playing game.
Developed by modders Halomaster481 and Sumradagnoth8, the Baldur’s Gate 3 Chivalry Expansion is a passion project that brings traditional medieval vibes to the fantasy RPG, largely using assets from Kingdom Come Delievrance and its sequel, The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy 16 and more.
Available to download here, the mod aims to give players “an Arthurian legend spin on your playthrough, facing heroes and villains of yore, from the legendary Black Knight to the Forgotten Heroes of the Gate”. Additionally, the mod makes classes more versatile with tonnes of new armour and weapon options for each class and subclass.
While the game boasts over 120 new items including 24 new weapons, 100+ new passives and abilities and 22 new armour sets, it’s the 10 new encounters that are most impressive. Alongside the addition of Fallen Knights that you can find throughout the game, the expansion will see you battle the cursed Dragon Rider and the iconic Black Knight with their own loot drops to claim.
Unfortunately, the mod is only available on the PC version of the game via Nexus Mods as the overall 6.5GB expansion is too big for the Baldur’s Gate 3 mod manager. However, the team is weighing up the possibility of releasing versions that add just the new encounters and just the new weapons and armour which could allow players to get the mod via the mod manager.
What’s most impressive is the amount of work that has been done to make all of these iconic armour sets fit on almost all body types in the RPG. At the time of writing, the armour doesn’t currently support smaller characters including Gnomes, Halflings, and Dwarfs, and many helmets don’t work on Dragonborns. However, everything else works just fine.
While not the biggest mod available for the game, Baldur’s Gate 3: Chivalry is just another example of how inventive the fandom is. Outside of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, what other game has such a vibrant and active modding community? I honestly can’t think of any. (Oh wait, Stardew Valley? Yeah, probably Stardew Valley.)
