As player numbers for the current game continue to fall, Bungie is reportedly working on a Destiny 2 Classic release that will offer users an older version of the popular MMOFPS game.
Leaked alongside plans for Destiny 3, which is said to be in “extremely early development”, Destiny 2 classic will seemingly be similar to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Classic. This would likely be a version of the game that focused on restoring vaulted content.
The leak comes from Starsiza, a well-known Destiny leaaker who was also one of the sources behind the Destiny 3 leak. However, unlike that title, few other leakers have corroborated the existence of a Destiny 2 Classic launch.
All leakers also claimed that Bungie is working on a number of projects, including future Destiny 2 content and the upcoming extraction shooter Marathon. While very few corroborated the existence of Destiny 2 Classic, it has been a long-requested release by long-time fans who wish to experience the game as it used to be.
“Destiny 2 Classic was just greenlit very recently,” the leaker explained in a now-gone Discord sever. “It’s why the roadmap has been pushed back so much.”
Since the game’s shift to free-to-play, there have been a number of considerable missteps with Destiny 2 that has caused the game’s player counts to drastically dwindle. Recently, the game’s hated Edge of Fate expansion launched alongside the new Portals UI which considerably pushed down the game’s MMO social focus.
However, there may be some major issues in bringing Destiny 2 back as a Classic experience. The original release’s Red War storyline has recently been the cause of a major lawsuit, which has just been settled. Although, the lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount, meaning that Red War may be able to return in the future.
A Destiny 2 Classic may seem like a good idea to many, allowing old and new fans alike to re-experience the game as it was released with lost content returned. However, many fans have also been asking for a modern re-release of the original Destiny game on PC and modern platforms which may seem like the smarter move. (Original Destiny with an unlocked framerate, graphical improvements and new content? Yes please.)
Right now, Destiny is continuing to struggle to maintain its core audience, even as the game’s Star Wars themed Renegades expansion nears release. With PlayStation vocally upset at the performance of Bungiees since its acquisition, some quick steps need to be taken to ensure there even is a future for the franchise.
