Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 has launched on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the 117GB behemoth to Nintendo’s latest handheld.

For the most part, the new port of the beloved MMO is a fantastic addition to Nintendo’s system. Right now, the entire game is playable on the handheld and runs better than expected in its most ambitious areas.

While the game is mostly great, fans have discovered that sometimes the game will spend significantly longer in loading screens than it should. For example, some areas that should load in seconds will end up taking up to a minute.

As it turns out, these loading screens are a bug, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has numerous bugs that cause the game to hang on a black screen. With this in mind, Square Enix will introduce a new patch that will fix these issues in the near future, allowing for a smoother experience.

“We have confirmed that in the Nintendo Switch 2 version, the loading time may take longer than usual when the screen fades to black in instanced duties,” the developer said in a statement. “Our investigation has confirmed that, when a player enters an instanced duty while surrounded by many characters, loading data will take longer than usual, which lasts until the player leaves the instance.”

“We have identified certain cases in which the data reloading and cache clearing processes required for safe rendering are taking an extended amount of time,” the developer said. “As such, these processes have been optimised to ensure faster data loading even under similar conditions, and the updated version is currently in testing.”

The developer has confirmed that the longer-than-expected loading screens occur during the following scenarios:

  • When the screen fades to black during a battle phase transition or when teleporting to a different map in an instanced duty
  • When the screen fades to black upon reviving after being K.O.’d in an instanced duty
  • When the screen fades to black upon using Return or a shortcut in an instanced duty

Square Enix hasn’t announced a release date for the patch at the time of writing. However, the developer is “working to release an update as soon as possible”. Considering the quite fast cadence of patches for the MMO, it shouldn’t be toolong until the game is even more playable on the handheld.
