Tetsuya Nomura always has a lot in his place, but the iconic game director is currently in the middle of juggling two giant projects: Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s finale and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4.
First shown off during the 20th anniversary of the series, Kingdom Hearts 4 is an ambitious start to a brand-new arc whereas Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has the titanic task of wrapping up a sprawling, multiversal story. Both of these projects are intense, but when can we actually play them?
Speaking during a recent Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis stream, Tetsuya Nomura explained that both the next FF7 chapter and the next Kingdom Hearts games are progressing well in the development.
“I’m seeing a lot of comments asking about Kingdom Hearts 4,” Nomura started. “We are making great strides and going according to schedule. So please wait for more information on that!”
As for when we can expect more information on the next Final Fantasy 7 entry, it seems we’ll be waiting until next year. Nomura explained that the team has “already decided when we will make the announcement”, and they’re not ruining those plans, but everything is proceeding as intended.
“[Motomu] Toriyama supposedly said we will have news around the time of the second anniversary of FF7EC,” Nomura revealed. “We are making great progress on the game! And I can’t say anything else. I’m not gonna be like, ‘Well, actually…’ If I did, people would be really surprised if it’s during this FF7EC livestream.”
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4 are massive releases for Square Enix. While titles like Final Fantasy 16 failed to meet expectations, these two games are essentially an easy win for the company, as long as the games themselves are good. Let’s hope they will be.
