Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be the final entry in the ongoing remake trilogy of the PlayStation 1997 original. While the upcoming RPG will conclude the original story by the end of the main game, leaked DLC plans have confirmed additional “story” content is coming after launch.

Following its announcement at The Game Awards, a large-scale leak on the Epic Games Store confirmed that story expansions are coming to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Some fans assumed that these stories would adapt the existing Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus storylines. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

First and foremost, in an interview with Automaton, director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the ending of the game won’t be locked off to DLC. The original FF7 ending—or whatever they’re doing for the ending of Revelation—will be included in the game, and potential DLC won’t act as a so-called “true ending”.

“The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with FF7 Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind,” the director told the outlet.

Hamaguchi still played coy with the existence of DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, despite the aforementioned leak. The director claimed that “things haven’t crystallised yet”, although they added that “both the media and the fan community are expecting a DLC to come” for the sprawling RPG.

The director explained that any and all DLC that does arrive will be similar to the first remake entry’s Intermission expansion. This expansion took the character of Yuffie and told a brand-new, never-before-seen story.

“If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie with FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, and I think there is demand for it among fans,” the director said. “So, in case we do end up considering making a DLC, this is the kind of thing that we’d likely attempt to do.”

Hamaguchi explained that any and all DLC will also take into account fan reception of the base release. This is similar to what happened with the aforementioned Intermission which started development after development concluded on the base game.

With that said, it does seem that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will get some post-launch DLC. Of course, it’s not known what stories these expansions will tell. Will we get prequels? Will we get sequels? Who knows! Whatever the case, there’s definitely more FF7 Remake coming our way in the future.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation releases sometime in Spring 2027 on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
