After a long absence, Sam Fisher’s return to gaming is still in development at Ubisoft. While news has largely centred on the studio’s future for Assassin’s Creed as well as the continued development of Beyond Good and Evil 2, the long-awaited Splinter Cell Remake is still in the works.

In a surprising post on LinkedIn, former Splinter Cell Remake game director David Grivel announced their return to Ubisoft’s secretive stealth project. Following a three-year absence, the project’s original game director is now back at the helm as the game’s current director.

“Today, I am very, VERY happy to announce that I’m rejoining Ubisoft Toronto as Game Director on the Splinter Cell Remake!” Grivel told followers on LinkedIn last week. “A very special team and project to me.”

When the project was announced, Grivel was the obvious choice for the game’s director after working as a senior designer for Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The developer also worked on Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 6 and more.

However, after a year of building the “design direction and vision” for the upcoming Splinter Cell Remake, the game director departed the project to work on the campaign of EA’s Battlefield 6. Afterwards, Grivel rejoined Ubisoft as a game director on an “unannounced project” before returning to the Splinter Cell Remake project in November 2025.

At the time of writing, very little is known about the upcoming remake of Sam Fisher’s debut journey. The upcoming remake is being developed with Ubisoft’s in-house Snowdrop engine—the cutting edge tech behind Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws.

Most importantly, the upcoming game will be a linear, mission-based title instead of an open world game or some other drastic gameplay shift. While there will undoubtedly be major changes to satisfy the modern gaming audience, the game is said to be preserving the feel of the original games with a focus on light and darkness, sound and gadgets.

There is currently no release date for Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Remake at the time of publication.
