The Coalition’s reveal of Gears of War: E-Day is not just a prequel of one of Xbox’s flagship franchises, but a bold new reinvention of a classic series. Adapting the iconic Emergence Day event of the original games’ past, this upcoming prequel finally evolved the Gears formula.

Revealed at the XBOX Game Showcase alongside some major Halo retcons and more, Gears of War: E-Day has been built “from a blank hard drive”. Instead of relying on the core gameplay of the series’ past, everything has been reinvented while looking at the past to bring Gears into the present.

I loved Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, they were great games, but the core gameplay of the series had admittedly barely moved forward. It’s not that the series was completely stagnant, but improvements were glacial, and the series has always felt iterative instead of innovative after Gears of War 2.

With Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition has not only returned to the series’ roots—the bromance between Marcus Fenix and his beloved Dom—but also pushed forward. E-Day is faster, feistier, and flashier. Environments crumble from your grenades and gunfire, and movement has been overhauled to give you more control over your environemnt.

In E-Day, you can slide under trucks, climb up shelves, and quickly reposition in a way that you simply couldn’t before. Unlike every other game series, Gears of War never really expanded its movement options, outside additional vehicles in the campaign. Now, battlefields are expanded in all directions, offering players with more to do and more control over their fights.

Of course, the focus for E-Day is the game’s single-player/co-op campaign where these new mechanics obviously offer some fantastic options. However, as someone who fell off of Gears’ Versus mode after the original trilogy ended, these new movement options change the game enough to entice me back into the games’ PvP versus mode.

The reality is that Xbox rested on the laurels of Halo, Forza, and Gears, and the platform itself has struggled to move forward amidst constant cancellations of intriguing new games. Today, at least, it does seem like Xbox is moving forward, and Gears’ bold new take on a classic formula is essential for that.

While Gears 4 and Gears 5 were great in their own right, E-Day is everything fans have wanted from the series. It is a shame that we may never actually get a follow-up to Gears 5 cliffhanger, although maybe it’s for the best considering the impossible task The Coalition wrote themselves into with that choice.

Gears of War: E-Day, combined with the brilliant-looking Halo: Campaign Evolved Remake, not only feels like a return to the golden days of Xbox, but a return to a time when these franchises were exciting again. It’s great to see Gears do something new, take bold strides, but while also maintaining everything fans love about it.

There’s only one bad thing, though: we have to wait for it. Gears of War: E-Day releases exclusively on Xbox and PC on October 6, 2026.
