For as long as Helldivers 2 has existed, fans have been calling for the addition of multi-faction battles. While developer Arrowhead has added a number of new enemies to the game since launch—including in yesterday’s 6.2.2 update—players have begged for enemies to fight each other or even work together.

As Arrowhead has promised “sequel-level features” will arrive in future updates, multi-faction skirmishes have been at the top of the wishlist for fans since the game’s 2024 launch. While the feature is not confirmed to be coming to the game, especially anytime soon, Arrowhead still discusses its inclusion.

Speaking to fans on Discord, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani confirmed that multi-faction battles have been officially discussed by developers working on the game. However, adding the feature to the game would be an incredibly complicated update, although it’s not ruled out right now.

“That would be cool and something that’s been discussed,” Jorjani said of the long-requested features. However, they added that “there are a lot of technical challenges to get that to work”. Unfortunately, they did not explain what the main challenges are to combining multiple enemy types into a single map.

While multi-faction skirmishes are still up in the air, although technically still possible, Arrowhead is focusing more on core improvements to the game in the form of progression. Following prior promises that the game will see “meaningful progression” updates that give players something to strive for, the studio has doubled down on these improvements being the most important path forward for the game.

In a recent AMA with fans, Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt explained that the upcoming progression improvements are a major priority for the studio. With that said, bolting on improved progression to a game with an existing fanbase “takes time to get right”.

“There are multiple plans and discussions about improving the existing systems such as progression, weapon customisation, DSS, etc,” Pilestedt told fans. “Unfortunately, we have been pushing hard to meet what we see as the expectation on content for each new big update which unfortunately means that the team is forced to down prioritise ‘what we already have’ in favor of novelty.”

While Helldivers 2 is currently in yet another major controversial period, the game itself is still fun, and the game’s latest update has just added two new biomes, a new enemy type, and more to the game. Additionally, even with the complaints surrounding super credits and more, the player base is still engaged with the future of HD2.
