While Sony Santa Monica works on the upcoming remakes of the original God of War Trilogy, fans only have to wait a short while for their next God of War adventure. Seemingly launching next year, although that is unconfirmed, God of War: Laufey sends players to a mysterious new realm dubbed the Everywhen.

Since its reveal, the upcoming God of War game, which is the next mainline canonical entry in the series, has received some heavy backlash. Some are unhappy with its tone and the introduction of a gelatinous talking cube named Phranque. Others are upset for other, more immature reasons.

In a discussion with a fan at a Floria Supercon, the game’s main star Deborah Ann Woll explained that she expected to be more hurt by the internet’s response. “I mean, genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it,” the talented actress told the fan.

Since the game’s reveal, Woll has simply not engaged with any of the online community and the outsiders attacking the game for other reasons. The actor explained that staying distanced from the online vitriol has meant that they aren’t “bothered” by any of the complaints, explaining that they know the game is great.

“1) I don’t consume—I’m not on social media, so that helps, and 2) I don’t know. I feel totally unbothered because I just know it’s great,” the actor told the fan. “Like, it’s okay if it’s not your cup of tea, but in no universe is it bad.”

While the story direction may not be the “cup of tea” that some God of War fans were hoping for, the game has seemingly evolved on the gameplay side. Obviously, we’ve only seen a small snippet of gameplay, but Laufey appears to have much faster, more versatile combat from the off compared to the heavy weight of Kratos.

Not much is known about the upcoming God of War game at the time of writing, but it’s been suggested that the game is “not years away”. All that’s truly known is that the game has been in some form of development for the past six years, Obviously, it’ll be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Additionally, despite PlayStation’s push to move away from offering physical disc releases of its games, God of War: Laufey will release on a disc. This means that the game will definitely release sometime before January 2028.
