NetEase is making a major gameplay change for its superhero multiplayer shooter Marvel Rivals. As the game reaches its second anniversary in the near future, the development team is cutting down on the game’s visual clutter.

As part of the game’s latest patch, which comes in the midst of Season 9, NetEase has started to tackle a major issue with visibility within the game. With players returning in huge numbers for the new season, NetEase has finally tackled the game’s long-standing issue with an abundance of visual effects.

If you check out the game’s latest patch notes, it’s confirmed that the game will now show less visual effects on screen at the same time. Of course, every main ability is still present and will be shown, but they have been slightly reduced to make sure you can actually still parse what’s happening when the action gets hot.

“We’ve dialled back the visual effects for a lineup of heroes to cut down on battlefield chaos and keep your superhero clashes crisp and clear,” the developer confirmed.

For starters, the patch largely targets the abilities of new character Jubilee as well as the newly added Team-Up abilities. These new abilities were some of the worst offenders, but almost every single ability has been tweaked in some way to make the battlefield more readable.

“The list is extensive, so we won’t detail every single one here; just know the battlefield is looking clean! We’ll keep the scanner running and make ongoing optimisations,” the developer told fans. Of course, some of these changes are much more noticeable than others, but the game should be less overwhelming in the heat of the moment.

This change has been a long-requested feature for months now, especially as new characters have arrived with egregious, overwhelming visual effects. While some enjoy the overabundance of flashing, splashing visuals, it can make the battlefield confusing when everyone is popping off their ultimate abilities at the same time.

As far as Marvel Rivals’ future goes, this is just one change in a wide plan for the hero shooter. While the game has started as PvP game, NetEase is hoping to turn the game into a “moving Marvel anime experience” as it continues to expand with new game modes.
