Marvel Rivals Season 9 is shaping up to be one of the biggest updates the hero shooter has received so far. Alongside Jubilee, a new Strategist, NetEase is preparing a major game overhaul that changes how every hero plays.

Speaking to FRVR, Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen said Season 9 is designed to push the game far beyond a standard balance update. Chen called the upcoming season “the most massive evolution of Marvel Rivals since launch.” Considering all the content coming with it, including Devil Dinosaur’s healing, this statement makes perfect sense.

“Season 9 is the most massive evolution of Marvel Rivals since launch,” Chen told us. “Our new Strategist hero, Jubilee, perfectly channels her iconic mutant energy into combat, using explosive fireworks to heal allies and blind enemies. Pushing the game forward, we’ve completely overhauled the Team-Up system, giving every hero independent loadouts to shatter the established capability boundaries of our heroes. Along with a new map and mode, this season is built to unlock unprecedented player creativity.”

The quote is important, as it shows that Marvel Rivals Season 9 is not simply adding another hero to the roster. Instead, the update appears to be part of NetEase’s larger plan to turn Marvel Rivals into something much bigger than a 6v6 PvP game.

Earlier this year, Chen told FRVR that the team’s goal is to move Marvel Rivals beyond being “just a shooter” and toward a “comprehensive Marvel moving anime experience.” He also confirmed that the game would expand beyond standard 6v6 PvP with new PvE content, Path to Doomsday updates, and MCU-inspired events.

Since Marvel Rivals is built on Unreal Engine 5, NetEase appears confident that the game can support the bigger modes, events, and gameplay systems planned for the future. If Season 9 is the start of that larger push, the next few months could be huge for the hero shooter.

Marvel Rivals Season 9 will completely overhaul Team-Ups and shields

The biggest gameplay change in Season 9 appears to be the new Team-Up system. Until now, Team-Ups have been one of Marvel Rivals’ defining features, giving certain heroes special interactions and bonus abilities when paired with specific characters. In Season 9, however, the system is being rebuilt around loadouts.

Every hero will now have two active Team-Up abilities. Some of these will be returning abilities, while many will be completely new. However, players will only be able to equip one Team-Up ability at a time. Fortunately, players won’t be locked into one choice for an entire match, as Team-Up abilities can be freely switched in the spawn room.

The biggest change is that Team-Up abilities will no longer require the partner character to be on your team. This means every hero will be able to use their selected Team-Up ability regardless of team composition. However, partner characters will still matter. With the correct partner hero on your team, the Team-Up ability will gain a more powerful enhanced effect.

In addition, the Team-Up anchor buff mechanic is being removed. Going forward, Team-Up abilities will no longer rotate out of the game, which should make Marvel Rivals buffs and nerfs slightly less complicated.

Finally, in addition to the Team-Up overhaul, NetEase will release regenerative shields in the hero shooter. This is a major gameplay mechanic that will change the way players play the game. With the new system, heroes who avoid taking damage for five seconds will begin regenerating their shield HP. This should reward players who disengage at the right time, use cover properly, and avoid unnecessary poke damage.

Between Regenerative Shields and the Team-Up overhaul, Season 9 could significantly change how players approach positioning, team fights, and hero matchups.

Marvel Rivals is becoming much more than a PvP shooter

These changes line up with NetEase’s bigger vision for Marvel Rivals. The game may have launched as a hero shooter built around 6v6 PvP, but the developer has repeatedly made it clear that it wants Marvel Rivals to grow into a much larger Marvel platform. The Team-Up overhaul is a big step toward that goal.

By giving every hero independent loadouts and allowing abilities to work without strict team requirements, NetEase is opening the door for more creative hero builds and less predictable matchups.

It’s also important to note that the game developer has prepared more content that will come after the release of Marvel Rivals Season 9. On July 23, NetEase will release a new Convoy map, Thebes, which has already gained a lot of attention.
