Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine will fully explain why the iconic X-Men mutant is able to regenerate his outfit alongside his body.
In Insomniac’s upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, players can dish out some extremely violent damage on their enemies, and enemies can dish out massive damage to Logan. With his healing factor, the mutant can regenerate any damage dished out to him and also regenerate his suit.
Insomniac claims that there’s a practical reason for why Logan’s clothes regenerate during gameplay. “You can’t play through most of the game wearing just shredded rags on his body,” head of technology Mike Fitzgerald said in an interview with IGN.
“So we find the right balance between clothing that reflects the gameplay you’re doing and this brutal combat and the realities of that that, and then finding the right moments to have it restore itself so you get that right cinematic feel of Wolverine.”
Following the interview, Insomniac community director James Stevenson told fans that the game does have an explanation as to why Wolverine’s clothes regenerate within the video game. “I think there is a line that explains it lore wise actually,” the developer laughed on Twitter.
As for what that explanation is, we’ll have to wait until Marvel’s Wolverine actually releases on September 15th. Until then, we’ll just have to take a guess, and thankfully the Marvel universe already has instances of regenerating clothing within the comic books, although usually not related to Wolverine himself.
In the very early Marvel Fantastic Four comics, Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic) created outfits out of “unstable molecules” that can adapt to a person’s body and powers. This allowed Sue Storm’s suit to turn invisible when she did, allowed his own suit to stretch as he stretched, and allowed it to sustain high temperatures for the Human Torch.
In Insomniac’s Marvel Universe, Earth-1048, it’s heavily suggested that the Fantastic Four are active within the world. There are references to Reed Richards and a rooftop is half-painted with the Fantastic Four logo in the studio’s Spider-Man games. However, it’s not clear if the superhero team is fully active as a crime-fighting quartet quite yet.
While a decent explanation, we don’t know if Wolverine or any other members of Team X, which is not the X-Men, have interacted with Mister Fantastic and the First Family which could throw this entire theory out the window. However, considering the fact that there is a lore reason for the regenerating superhero outfit, it’s a strong contender.
