Battlefield 2042 may have been ambitious but it EA DICE has admitted it didn’t quite have the right feel many would have expected from a Battlefield game. Returning to a modern military setting and reviving classic maps, the hype surrounding its successor, Battlefield 6, is undeniable, and developer DICE can feel the energy surrounding it.
Speaking to PCGamesN as the team prepare to launch Battlefield 6, Jeremy Chubb, a producer at DICE, admitted that this year’s game is far more aligned with previous iterations in the series – and as a a result, the general sentiment feels ‘a little different’ towards it.
“This game [Battlefield 6] is much more in tune with what we built in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, particularly,” he told the outlet. “Aspects of those games come through really strong.”
“There’s an energy that we’re getting from the audience right now which is overwhelming,” Chubb continued, “that I think feels a little different [to Battlefield 2042]. There’s a confidence to us because we set up to work with the community.”
Battlefield 2042 didn’t have the smoothest of launches. Despite boasting vast 128-player lobbies and sprawling maps, technical issues marred gameplay. “I think 2042, for us, was a very ambitious goal,” said Chubb. “Trying to embrace the possibilities of 128-player and even larger-scale maps. For a lot of our audience, it didn’t quite have the right feel.”
However, DICE has scaled back player lobbies in Battlefield 6, in an attempt to create gameplay more aligned to player expectations. In an interview with EDGE Magazine, design director Shashank Uchil explained that the team decided to revert to the classic 64-player match sizes because the larger team sizes simply did not work.
โLook, we try stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnโtโฆโ the developer told the magazine. โItโs as simple as thatโฆ We thought larger player numbers would work โ it just didnโt catch on. Itโs like when a band tries a new sound.โ
Battlefield 6 is due to be released on October 10, but if you’re bored, why not try one of the best FPS browser games while you wait?
