Cyberpunk 2077 is the master of the first-person cutscene. From the opening Night City montage to the game’s ending, CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG is a masterclass of immersive storytelling, but some fans still want the option for third-person cinematics.
It’s already become quite clear that the early in-development Cyberpunk 2 will continue the trend of first-person cutscenes. However, in a new discussion with fans, the upcoming game’s creative director Igor Sarzynski, explained that changing first-person cutscenes to third-person would be “jarring”.
“Ah, another thread on Reddit about how 3rd person cutscenes would’ve made the game better,” Sarzynski said on social media. “I really wish anyone was specific for once. Exactly which of the FPP scenes would’ve been better as a non-interactive oldschool cutscene.”
Of course, there is always the option of having some cutscenes in first-person and some cutscenes in third-person. Cyberpunk 2077, and potentially its upcoming sequel, take place entirely in third-person, allowing you to leave, breathe, and immerse yourself into the world of Night City.
Sarzynski argues that “doing 3rd person cutscenes only sometimes would’ve been jarring AF”, even guaranteeing that it would pull users out of the scene. As for whether the game should’ve had third-person cutscenes for the entire story? Well, the Cyberpunk 2 creative director argues that would make it “a completely different game”.
Furthermore, Sarzynski debunked claims that making cutscenes wholly first-person is somehow easier than third-person. (After all, in third-person, a lot of animations can be faked with clever tricks). “Doing interactive, nonlinear, real-time scenes with no cuts but camera- and often movement freedom is 3x as difficult and expensive as doing oldschool cutscenes,” he said. “If we wanted to cut scope we would do W3 (The Witcher 3) style scenes.”
For Sarzynski, focusing on first-person cutscenes was incredibly rewarding for Cyberpunk 2077. “My fav[e] thing is when I saw players rocking camera-head during [the] Red Dirt Samurai concert,” he said. “Sometimes I wish we implemented reading shaking/nodding as no/yes choice [in game].” Hey, maybe a mechanic for Cyberpunk 2?
Sarzynski has often discussed his decision to focus entirely on first-person cutscenes in the past, arguing that they “value uninterrupted immersion” more than what third-person cutscenes can offer. Nevertheless, fans still crave third-person in Cyberpunk 2077 and its upcoming sequel, especially because of the first game’s brilliant character customisation and style. Will it happen, though? Unlikely.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently seeing yet another surge in popularity following the reveal of Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2. Unfortunately, it will be a long time until the game’s sequel is playable by fans with an expected release date of 2030 or after.
