It seems that CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2 may have some form of multiplayer. According to a job listing, some quests in the game could have some form of multiplayer functionality.
Cyberpunk 2 is currently in early development at CD Projekt Red’s new Boston studio. While the project is constantly evolving, the first-person RPG sequel currently has over 150 workers on the game. However, CDPR is always hiring more as the game continues development.
In a new job listing specifically for Cyberpunk 2, it’s hinted that quests will have some form of multiplayer integration. The job listing, found here, asks for a Lead Quest Programmer to “help bridge design vision and technical execution” of stories within the game’s world.
In the “nice to have” section, CDPR asks for “familiarity with Unreal Engine architecture”, as the game is built on Unreal Engine 5. However, they also ask for “understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronisation for game state/quests”.
While Cyberpunk 2077 was originally announced with a standalone multiplayer mode. This mode, which appeared to be a PvP game, was described as an overindulgence by the team. “We wanted to do many things at the same time, and we just needed to really focus and say, ‘Okay, what’s the important part? Yeah, we will make that part really good,” quest designer Phillip Webber explained in 2022.
Cyberpunk 2’s multiplayer features seem to be tied into the main game itself. With syncing game states, it seems that multiplayer players will be able to engage in some quests together, presumably in a form of co-op. This doesn’t mean the main story will support multiplayer, or even that multiplayer will make it to launch, but there are certainly discussions about its inclusion.
CDPR has not been shy about its intention to have some form of multiplayer across every one of its franchises at some point. The Witcher, for example, will receive its own multiplayer-focused spin-off in the form of Project Sirius, which doesn’t currently have a release date.
With Cyberpunk 2 built on Unreal Engine 5, it should be a little easier for the game to support some form of multiplayer rather than building it from scratch in RedEngine. While some fans might not engage in any co-op or PvP in the upcoming RPG, fans have spent years attempting to mod multiplayer into its predecessor, and it would be a nice to have.
It’s worth noting that there’s no official confirmation from CD Projekt Red that multiplayer or co-op is definitely intended to be in the launch version of Cyberpunk 2. However, the job listing shows that they are at least considering it.
