Blizzard is changing a lot about Diablo 4 in the coming months with plans to make past Seasonal Powers a permanent addition, the arrival of a long-awaited loot filter, and the upcoming expansion which appears to be adding the Paladin class and returning to Westmarch.

For now, Diablo 4 is still focused on seasonal updates with the upcoming Season 10 adding a host of new content including a brand-new Chaos Armor feature. In the Season of Infernal Chaos stream, D4 devs explained that this season’s newest addition aims to add a feature that not only offers a fun seasonal change, but actually pushes gameplay forward.

In Season 10, Chaos Armor are variants of existing uniques that offer more options to players. For example, one Unique pair of gloves may not have a Chaos variant which can be equipped as boots, allowing for countless new combinations. Blizzard is taking seasons as a chance for bold experimentation, attempting to push gameplay in a different direction and see how players take to it.

“Feedback from players was about how some seasonal powers were feeling additive where you just slapped it on top of your build and weren’t really changing how you build your deck, to use that analogy,” explained game designer Charles Dunn. “We heard that a lot around some of the previous seasons and this is our response to it by making a seasonal power structure that recontextualises everything.”

Unique weapons can now drop as armour, and vice versa, with millions of additional combinations for builds now available as a result. Many players’ biggest complaints regarding Diablo 4 have revolved around the lack of exciting character progression, but this offers a new opportunity to explore never-before-seen builds for your favourite classes.

Game designer Aislyn Hall explains that the addition of Chaos Armour is inspired by trading card games as “you typically build a deck from a bunch of different cards”. Some TCGs—such as Magic the Gathering—offer variants of cards, allowing effects to be used in different ways.

Chaos Armor isn’t an instant fix for Diablo 4’s slew of gameplay issues, but it is an exciting change from the game’s usual seasons. If we continue to get seasons that actually experiment instead of offering seasonal powers over and over again, it might be exciting again.
