Alien Isolation 2 may only be in early development at Creative Assembly, but the team behind the horror project spent years wanting a sequel. While the original game didn’t sell particularly well, it instantly became a critical darling.

In the years since release, fans have clamoured for a follow-up to Creative Assembly’s iconic horror game, and they’re not the only ones. According to a dev who worked on the 2014 original, a sequel is something ‘everyone on the team wanted to do for a long time.

Speaking on the FRVR Podcast, which you can listen to on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more, Alien Isolation writer Dion Lay explained that while a follow-up has long been discussed, Disney’s acquisition of Fox made it a ‘lot more possible’.

When asked if they were surprised that, after a decade, a sequel was finally able to get off the ground, Lay responded: “I know that everyone wanted to do it, in order for it to be a possibility.

“I think it was always like, ‘could it happen? Could it happen?’ But I think that Disney buying Fox made it a lot more possible, just because I think Disney seemed to be doing a push on, like, right let’s get all these IPs and do something with them and get them running again.”

After working on the horror game, SEGA and FOX didn’t agree to a sequel. Instead, Creative Assembly teamed up with 343 Industries to make Halo Wars 2, another brilliant game, and the team wasn’t allowed to make a sequel to that either.

Since the Disney acquisition, Alien has received a new feature film, a VR game (which recently received a non-VR version), a Disney Plus TV show, and a number of novels and comics books including tie-ins with Marvel Comics. A sequel to Alien: Romulus is also in the works.

The Alien franchise has seen a major resurgence following the Disney acquisition.

Alien Isolation 2 was officially revealed in October 2024 on the 10th anniversary of the game’s release. Confirmed as being in the early stages of development, details are very thin on the ground. It’s expected to follow the same bone-chilling horror set up as the previous game.

Creative director Al Hope said at the time on X, formerly Twitter, that the development team would share more details “when we’re ready.”

Reports point to the game being built in Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, replacing the now dated Cathode, which powered the original. There’s no news yet on any actors associated with the project, but we could start to hear whispers about progress some time in 2026.

While Alien Isolation has become a hit with fans of the acclaimed sci-fi series over the years, the sales figures were nothing to write home about. Even publisher SEGA came out at the time and described the 2.1million copies sold in 2015 as ‘weak‘.

Lay revealed that they thought the game could have sold more if the fear factor was watered down, but is proud the team didn’t do it.
