Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 is one of the biggest MMOs on the planet with heaps of additional content on the way, and a potential Nintendo Switch 2 port possibly in development to give players even more options to join the game.

Final Fantasy 14 is also a game that has been through a lot with current director Yoshi-P spending more than a decade working on the MMO after its launch failure. Despite working on the game for over 10 years, Yoshi-P is far from done with the project.

In an interview with Noisy Pixel, the FF14 director explained that his job is to continue working on the MMO, despite the director’s involvements in other projects. When asked if he ever gets bored of working on the game, the director responded that he’s “more of a businessman”, seeing the MMO as a job he has to do.

“I make games, and of course people tend to say we’re creators or creative, but I am an employee at Square Enix and I receive money to make games,” the director said. “I think my primary purpose is to make games so that we are delivering it to gamers out there, fans, players who want to consume our product. I think that is fundamental, or a minimum requirement that I have because I belong to this company.

“There are a lot of things that I have yet to actualise in 14, things that I want to do, things that I must do.”

The Final Fantasy 14 lead explains that developers that get bored with a project should remove themselves from it or else they would bring that entire project down.

“Of course, working in a company and feeling bored with a particular project and starting to claim ‘well, I don’t like this game, I’m bored with this game’, then I think people like that would need to remove themselves from a corporate environment if they want to pursue that style,” Yoshi-P said. “But I don’t have that strong personal desire to go into my own creative things.”

The director explained that he simply doesn’t get bored with working on the MMO as he knows there are too many things that need to be completed. While it may be the same game at its core, Final Fantasy 14 has evolved significantly and there’s always ways of evolving it further.

“When asked do I ever get bored with Final Fantasy 14, I don’t think so, because there are a lot of things that I have yet to actualise in 14, things that I want to do, things that I must do, things that require to be taken care of. And so, I think for at least a good while, I should be okay,” he continued.

“Now, if there’s one thing that I want to do less off, and I might get scolded, but I would rather not do a lot of management or operational things. I already do a lot of game developing and I’ve sacrificed some sleep sometimes, but perhaps if I were to have a choice, I would like to focus in on the game development design.”
