While prior entries in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy already boasted huge install sizes, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will seemingly have the largest install of all. While the upcoming RPG is still in-development, it seems that the game may come in at “around 200GB”, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has already drawn the ire of some fans due to the fact that its physical release will not be complete on disc. This is despite the fact that the last game, Rebirth, did release on multiple discs with a massive 150GB install size.
On Nintendo Switch 2, where the game will have more compressed textures and less assets in general, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is said to be around 130GB. However, for the higher quality version, Hamaguchi has explained that it may cross the 200GB install. After all, exceeding the 200GB limit would mean the game would have to come on three discs instead of two.
“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” Hamaguchi said in an interview with VGC.
On the state of the game’s physical release, the director said: “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.
“One thing I want to say is, even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product. That was really important to us. Trust me!”
Another aspect of the physical release is the scheduling that takes place with Hamaguchi stating that the game needs to be ready “three months before” to complete “all these performance checks, and you really need to schedule things out”. This is why on-disc versions of games, while largely feature complete, still have Day One patches with bug fixes, performance improvements, and more.
While Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will likely release with a 200GB install, the game is also set to expand with more DLC stories after launch. Right now, the team has confirmed the arrival of Vincent and Sephiroth storylines that will release after launch, but there are seemingly more in early stages as well.
