The developer behind the ambitious Half Life 2 Remake project has posted a status update following a four-month absence. GameROOSH, the solo developer behind the project, has been hard at work rebuilding Valve’s beloved FPS since 2023 on a modified version of the Source Engine 2013 that adds deferred rendering, higher-quality PBR textures, more scene clutter, and enhanced lighting.
However, there were some concerns from fans that the project had been abandoned after the last status update was sent at the start of December 2025. Those fears, however, are now allayed, with GameROOSH confirming the project is “going great” and hinting that a demo will be on the way.
The modder admitted that the reason for their long silence wasn’t due to any development issues or losing faith in the project, something that often plagues mods. Instead, the reason is more comedic than most: they forgot their account login, and couldn’t post any updates.
“The reason I haven’t posted anything, including a demo version, is very simple: I forgot my account login and just couldn’t get access,” he wrote on Moddb. “I have too many email addresses, and none of them worked. Luckily, I found a photo on my old iPhone โ back when I was registering the page, I took a picture just in case. And now, almost three years later, that ‘just in case’ moment came in handy.”
He went on to say that the project is moving along smoothly, and development is going well”. “In some aspects, I’m even ahead of the planned schedule,” he added. Although, there is no proposed release date for the full release at the time of publication.

While no official release date for the demo was revealed, GameROOSH did say what to expect, namely a few levels from the game. “Right now, I’m working on locations pretty quickly,” he said. “As for the demo โ I can’t say for sure yet. There are a couple of things that might spoil the impression of it, so maybe it won’t be ‘Lost Coast’ as a demo, but rather a few levels from the game.
Half-Life 2 Remake isn’t the only new version of Valve’s 2004 masterpiece on the horizon. Alongside this fan remake, which aims to look like an enhanced version of the original that stays completely true to its look, the official Half-Life 2 RTX project is also in development.
In development by Orbifold Studios, “a collective of developers who love Half-Life, formed by the teams behind Half-Life 2: VR, Half-Life 2: Remade Assets, Project 17, and Raising the Bar: Redux”, the RTX Remix version of Valve’s iconic FPS game has received an official demo, but still doesn’t have a release date.
Right now, fans can play through the game’s brilliant Ravenholm section right here with full ray-tracing and enhanced textures. While much more graphically advanced than the aforementioned Half-Life 2 Remake mod, it also makes more drastic changes to the game’s art style, and is also much, much more performance intensive.
