A new VR mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection has brought the entirety of Halo 3 into full virtual reality, complete with full motion controls.
Created by Pancreations, the Halo 3 VR mod allows for per-eye stereo and 6DOF head tracking as well as fully articulated arm animations, controller-driven weapon aiming and smooth movement. It’s literally everything I’ve ever wanted from a VR version of Halo 3.
Available to download right here on Github, this isn’t made by the same modder behind the brilliant Halo: Combat Evolved VR mod. It’s worth noting that the mod has been made with the use of AI-generated code, although a number of fixes have already come through since its initial release to fix some annoying quirks.
Additionally, now that the mod is in a playable state, the modder is collaborating with other Halo and VR modders to bring support to other games in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. This could mean that Halo 2, Halo Reach, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4 could all be playable in virtual reality within the coming years.
At the time of writing, the mod is still in an early alpha state with new fixes releasing at a fast clip. Nevertheless, even in this early state, Halo 3 is now fully playable from start to finish in virtual reality, which is a dream come true for many VR gamers, including myself.
Fans have been waiting for a VR mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection for years. VR modder Nibre, who worked on the VR mod for Alien Isolation, revealed an MCC mod dubbed ReclaimerVR back in 2019 which brought full VR and motion controls to Halo Reach. Unfortunately, that mod was shelved after the modder was hired by 343 Industries.
There are some dream improvements that would heavily improve the VR-ness of Halo 3’s new VR conversion. For example, putting grenades around the hip for you to pick up and throw would immensely help immersion. However, as it is right now, it’s Halo 3 in VR, and that’s just amazing right now.
