As far as multiplayer games go, Helldivers 2 is definitely one of my favourites of the generation, but for a game with such a brilliant community, the game does lack some social features that you’d expect from a modern multiplayer game.
One feature that fans have frequently called for over the last two years is the addition of Clans, a way of forming a group of like-minded players and earning a shared reputation amongst the wider community. It was assumed that Clans would be added to the game over a year ago with the arrival of the DSS, a feature which fans assumed would bring a social hub to the game to hang out with others.
In the past, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani explained that a social space similar to The Tower in Bungie’s Destiny is “on the feature list for the next one”, aka Helldivers 3, but won’t be coming to the current game. Unforutnately, it seems that Clans is one of those features that will also have to wait until the eventual sequel.
Speaking to fans on Discord, Jorjani explained that bringing clans to Helldivers 2 “would be so cool”, but teased that it may be too big of an undertaking to add into the current game. “But it sounds like a megabeefy feature,” the CEO told fans.
Jorjani explained that “almost everyone in the studio works on content, features, support and maintenance” with around 150-200 people currently at work on existing plans releasing as part of the game’s ongoing roadmap. However, it seems that even with the sizeable headcount, introducing Clans would simply be major technical undertaking due to the way the game has been built.
However, Jorjani did not give a direct “no” to the possibility that Clans could be added to Helldivers 2 one day, and fans have been calling for additional social features since the game’s release more than two years ago. If a Destiny-like social hub is completely off the table, would Clans maybe make an appearance some day in the future.
Arrowhead has claimed that it wants to bring “sequel-level features” to Helldivers 2 as it continues to expand for years to come, and the introduction of more social features should be part of that. Maybe we could have more games to play on the Super Destroyer, maybe firing ranges to test guns that also have scores attached for co-op play. Helldivers 2 is a brilliant co-op experience in matches, but it does leave you wanting a bit more outside of them.
