Helldivers 2 players are currently infiltrating Automaton mining planets as part of the latest stretch of the Into the Unjust campaign.

Following major setbacks earlier this year, Arrowhead has resumed regular content drops with the release of new missions and the recent Python Commandos Warbond. However, the coolest content the studio could possibly drop is currently in a prototype stage.

Speaking to fans on social media, CCO Johan Pilestedt revealed that Arrowhead was working on a rogue-lite mode that “changes the game fundamentally”.

Pilestedt didn’t confirm whether or not this mode is actually planned for a future content drop, but they did confirm that the game’s “next four arc” have been planned at Arrowhead.

“Hey! We have a prototype of a rogue-lite mode – it changes the game fundamentally!” the Arrowhead CCO said on Twitter.

Additionally, Pilestedt confirmed that the game is in a much “better technical space” that should allow Arrowhead to deliver major content drops and future story arcs “a bit more often” than before.

The idea of a rogue-lite addition to Helldivers 2 does sound fantastic, but would it harm the game’s overall design? Right now, everyone is focused on the same major orders and progression, but would a rogue-lite mode take away from that feeling of a cohesive war effort?

Maybe, in the future, one of these upcoming arcs could be the game’s rogue-lite mode with every player forced to play through a rogue-lite campaign after an invasion by the Illuminate, Automatons, Termanids or even a coalition of all three. After all, the Illuminate already have mind-breaking warp functionality—could they force Super Earth into a time-bending nightmare?

Whatever the case, Helldivers 2 definitely feels exciting again with the game’s massive file size reduced on PC, much improved performance and a host of bug fixes. Of course, there are still plenty of bugs, but that is at least part of the charm of Arrowhead’s game.
