Larian boss Sven Vincke has revealed that gamers won’t need to play through the earlier Divinity games to understand what’s going on. Speaking to Gamesradar, the studio boss said that while some of the newer games serve as an interesting “blueprint” into how the brilliant Baldur’s Gate 3 was created, they’re absolutely not required to play ahead of their next RPG, Divinity.

“If you played Baldur’s Gate 3 because it was a cinematic narrative experience, you shouldn’t play the previous ones unless you want to know the lore,” he told the outlet.

“If you played because you really enjoy tactical combat or co-op multiplayer or really having lots of freedom, you should definitely play Original Sin 2, because that’s a game that was a blueprint for BG3. Original Sin 1 also, although in slightly lesser manner, because it didn’t have the companions that we had in those two. So I would point you in the direction of those games.”

After the success ofย Baldurโ€™s Gate 3, the gaming community was waiting to see what Larian had up their sleeves – especially after the studio confirmed they were moving away from Dungeons & Dragons. Then, at this year’s The Game Awards, Divinity was announced – alongside an incredibly graphic trailer, a project that Vincke says will be Larian “unleashed“.

Since the reveal, players have jumped back into the older titles, with both Divinity Original Sin 2 and Divinity Original Sin showing significant player count increases on Steam DB. But for those thinking about jumping back into the older games, or trying them for the first time, Vincke warns they may be a little “outdated”.

“If you really want to know everything, there are games that came before,” Vincke added, “but they’re a bit outdated by now, they are quite old.”

There’s no set Divinity release date, but Vincke claimed in aย conversation with Bloomberg, that he considers a three-to-four-year development cycle much โ€œhealthierโ€ than the six-year stint it took to create Baldur’s Gate 3. ย
