Toxic voice and text chat has followed Marvel Rivals since launch, and it turned into a major controversy in September. Now, NetEase has raised its penalties for abusive players, and Marvel Rivals chat bans can last up to a full year. Furthermore, a new moderation page explains how voice chat gets checked even when nobody files a report.

In a recent announcement, NetEase said it has escalated penalties for insults, harassment, discrimination and hate speech, with significantly harsher punishments for severe and repeated offenses. However, the crackdown arrives only weeks after players discovered they could no longer select hate speech as a report reason.

How long do Marvel Rivals chat bans last now?

Alongside the announcement, NetEase launched a new Moderation Policy page. It says Marvel Rivals chat bans can last up to 365 days, depending on how severe the violation is. Repeated offenses can lead to a long-term account suspension that blocks players from logging in.

The page also explains that the system automatically checks the game’s voice channels and analyzes both what players say and its context, so punishment doesn’t depend only on reports. Text chat is monitored in real time as well, while player reports and manual reviews cover everything else.

Interestingly, this seems to be the first time NetEase has put a number on Marvel Rivals chat bans. Previous announcements covered voice screening and leaver penalties, but none of them listed how long Marvel Rivals chat bans could last. Considering that, the new page gives players a clear idea of the worst penalty a chat violation can bring.

In September, the hate speech option had disappeared from the voice and text chat report menus. Players were left with broader labels, such as toxic content and inappropriate language. The backlash grew after streamer Silky was reportedly called a racial slur in a match, and several creators said they were leaving the game.

NetEase didn’t publicly explain the removal at the time, and the October 16 announcement doesn’t mention the report menu at all. Instead, it simply encourages players to use the reporting function when they run into speech violations.

It’s important to note that tougher Marvel Rivals chat bans will likely only work as well as the reports and detection behind them. However, automatic voice checks could catch slurs that players never report, as the system doesn’t need a report to act. NetEase also said it will keep refining how it identifies and penalizes toxic speech.

Earlier this year, NetEase introduced a new system that punishes throwers and refunds lost rank points. Furthermore, players who farm stats while standing still can face permanent bans in Marvel Rivals.
