Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is sadly still trapped on Sony’s ageing PlayStation 3. While there is hope that the PS3 exclusive could come to more systems with the in-development Master Collection Volume 2 release, some fans have asked for a full-on remake.
Konami’s recent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has been a large success with over a million copies sold. With the project designed to teach a new generation of developers how to make a Metal Gear game, there’s hope that more of Hideo Kojima’s franchise could be remade, but Konami has not decided what title is next in line.
Speaking to Japanese publication Real Sound, and translated by VGC, series producer Noriaki Okamura explained that the team is still deciding what their next project is. Additionally, the team may not even do another remake. It’s all undecided.
“Right now, we’re still in the stage of thinking about what to make next,” the producer said. “Since Metal Gear has given us a chance to reach a new audience, I’d like to keep building on that momentum.
“That said, the actual content of what we’ll make is still undecided. It could be another remake, or we might take on something entirely new.”
Okamura explained that the team could take from any of the Metal Gear games, not just the 3D titles. Additionally, with each title being so different from each other, the team “have no intention of simply applying the same methodology we used for MGS Delta to every game”.
When asked whether or not the team would be interested in giving Metal Gear Solid 4 a full remake, Okamura explained that it would be difficult. Unlike MGS 3, which runs the original game code underneath an Unreal Engine 5 graphics pipeline, Guns of the Patriots may require a lot more work.
“The hardware at that time required some very unusual designs to get 3D performance out of the technology available, and MGS4’s code ended up being quite unconventional as well,” the producer said. “Bringing it over today seems like it would be a real challenge.”
Nevertheless, the team is proud of what it managed to do with Metal Gear Solid Delta, especially considering the fact that many of the game’s original developers have left.
“As a team, we’re confident that we managed to preserve the appeal of the past titles while achieving a level of quality that modern players can enjoy,” he continued. “At the moment, we’re exploring concrete plans for what comes next.”
While the team could spend forever remaking old games, it would be nice to see an original project at some point. Sure, the original MGS could probably benefit from a massive from-the-ground-up remake, but it would be far more satisfying for fans to have a brand-new entry to explore.
Alongside Metal Gear, Konami is also heavily focused on the revival of Silent Hill. Following the success of Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill F, there are a large number of additional games in development including a remake of the original game.
