Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was a big move for Konami. The Unreal Engine 5 remake of the PlayStation 2 classic has already sold over a million copies since launch, helping the series hit a new sales milestone.
While the game was largely designed to train a new generation how to make a Metal Gear game with the absence of Hideo Kojima, the team behind the project also included some original content. In a post-launch update, Konami released Fox Hunt, a brand-new multiplayer mode that gives players a brand-new MGS experience to enjoy… but players simply can’t enjoy it.
Prior to launch, there was worry from fans and press alike that Konami’s complete lack of cross-play across systems would leave Fox Hunt dead on arrival, and that worry has come true. Despite selling well on launch, many players have not jumped back into the game to try the new multiplayer mode, and those that have are struggling to find games.
At the time of wriring, barely anyone is jumping into Fox Hunt with players on Xbox, the lowest-selling platform for the remake, particularly struggling to find matches. Since the mode’s release on October 30, 2025, the game’s highest concurrent Steam player count has been just 1,065 players, but even then a significant portion of those players were engaging in the title’s single-player mode.
It doesn’t help that getting into a match within the game does not result in particularly good networking with choppy servers and unsatisfying hit registration. There’s also an abundance of other issues including an abhorrent time-to-kill that requires fans to hit another player with nine headshots from an AR to take them down, as some fans have reported.
“Fox Hunt really should have been a free to play standalone game on Steam,” one fan said on Reddit. “Also the devs clearly did not make ANY marketing whatsoever, they never advertised Fox Hunt anywhere, so no wonder nobody knows it even exists. I’m a huge MGO fan, yet if it wasn’t for this subreddit and my friends on discord, i never saw ANY piece of advertisement whatsoever for Fox Hunt.”
It’s a shame, as Fox Hunt does have a number of great ideas resting under the surface, but it’s been absolutely shafted by its lack of cross-play and horrendous server quality. While there has been some advertising for the mode—mostly via Konami’s recent Delta Hunt partnership—there has been little push from the company to support the new game mode.
Nevertheless, Konami is seemingly still primed to release more Metal Gear titles over the next few years, although admittedly less than Silent Hill. Master Collection Volume 2, a new compilation of MGS games, is in development for modern platforms which will likely revive MGS4: Guns of the Patriots as well as Portable Ops, Peace Walker and more. (Acid and Acid 2 would be fantastic additions, Konami, just saying!)
