While most of us in the West know the delightful David Hayter as the gruff voice of Metal Gear Solid protagonist Solid Snake, Japanese gamers are more familiar with the voice of Akio Otsuka, and they really want to play the character again.
As Konami continues its resurgence, the Japanese gaming icon has released a new Silent Hill game every year, but Metal Gear Solid has been stuck in remakes and remasters. Yes, those remasters are great with MGS4 now freed from its PlayStation 3 exclusive chains, but fans are still waiting on a brand-new game.
It turns out that Otsuka is also waiting. While the voice actor returned alongside the Western cast for some pick-ups for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, he’s still waiting for a brand-new game that will let him play the role he’s grown a “sense of pride” for.
Speaking to Japanese outlet Bunshun, Otsuka explained that he will continue to collaborate for Kojima. For example, the actor is the english voice of Tommie Earl Jenkins’ Die Hardman in Death Stranding, and he teased that he may be collaborating with the game director in the future. “I’ll leave that to your imagination,” he said.
As for the future of Metal Gear Solid, well, that’s what Otsuka is really waiting for, even if Kojima won’t be involved in future games. “There are Metal Gear fans all over the world,” he said, “and they’ve been waiting patiently for [another one]. So, for their sake, let’s make one more Metal Gear!”
While Otsuka knows that fans could be put off by the fact that Kojima won’t be involved with the long-running series, he explained that he’s “making his own games”.With that said, he believes that its been long enough that it’s now fine to make another Metal Gear Solid without the director’s involvement.
“I think, ‘Why not?’ It’s okay to do it [not]? That’s how I feel,” the actor said. With Kojima now making his own spiritual successor in the form of the now-Xbox-published Physint, maybe it is okay for Konami to create original entries in the stealth-action series.
While Silent Hill has taken up the bulk of Konami’s focus since its return, the studio has expressed a desire to create additional Metal Gear Solid games in the future. In fact, one of the reasons why MGS Delta: Snake Eater was created was to teach a brand-new generation of game developers how to make a game in the series.
There are also rumours that one more remaster compilation will be released in the form of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 3. This remaster compilation is said to house a remaster of MGS V: The Phantom Pain as well as a remaster of Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. Although, it would be nice if some of the spin-off games, such as Acid and Acid 2, could also return.
