Bungie’s Marathon is not being abandoned anytime soon. Following the developer’s comments that it has at least a “few years” of updates planned for the extraction shooter, the studio’s plans are now being backed by PlayStation.

Despite PlayStation’s recent reports that its Bungie’s acquisition has been wrought with losses, the console leader is backing the studio’s bid to continue development on Marathon. As Bungie hopes to turn the game’s low player counts around, PlayStation is along for the ride.

While Marathon has only sold around 1.2 million copies since launch, Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed that it will not be giving up on the game yet. “Player reception to Marathon is strong,” the CFO admitted, “with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90% of the player review[s] on Steam being positive”.

Right now, fans can only look at public retention of the game on Steam, which has been less than idea considering the small player pool. However, Tao explains that “engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level” across its full suite of available platforms.

As for the future of the game, Tao confirmed that there will be continued support for the extraction shooter. “Going forward, we aim to improve the performance of the game by working to retain highly engaged core users through the introduction of additional content, further improvements in the game play experience and expansion of the user base,” the CFO said.

The news that PlayStation will continue to back Marathon may be surprising to some simply due to the company’s behaviour in the past. PlayStation’s first-party hero shooter Concord—which admittedly launched to much lower player counts than Bungie’s title—was scrapped mere weeks after launch.

Bungie is adamant that they are looking to support the new extraction shooter for the “long haul”, and post-launch support has been strong. As the game continues its first season, Bungie is prepping for the launch of the game’s first new hero in June, alongside new weapons, a nighttime map, and a brand-new system.

At the time of writing, Bungie has only revealed plans for the extraction shooter up until the release of Season 3 at the end of August. After that, the game’s current roadmap ends, likely with a larger-than-normal update planned to release late in the year.

Marathon is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series at a budget price.
