Creative Assembly’s presence at The Game Awards 2025 left fans of Games Workshop’s grimdark sci-fi universe agape with awe. Announced without a release date, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will bring the devastating large-scale battles of the 40K universe into the epic startegy gameplay of Total War on PC, Xbox and PS5 at some point in the future.
While the game’s lavish CG trailer was filled with a collection of iconic playable factions across the Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari. However, in a press release sent out by Creative Assembly, its been revealed that players will be able to create their own factions for the first time in the Total War series.
“For the first time in Total War, forge an army that’s truly your own,” Creative Assembly confirmed. “Shape every detail from the faction’s title, heraldry, iconography and arcane wargear. Define their traits, sharpen their tactics, and unleash a signature style of destruction that leaves your mark upon the galaxy.”
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 won’t shy away from the absolute decimation of the universe’s battles with the game promising consistent “graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict… and depictions of injury and death”.
Not much is known about the game at the time of writing, but the game’s campaign will see players engaging in multiple “tactical engagements across war-torn worlds featuring distinct biomes, battlefield types” with each environment offering “dynamic destruction”.
Fans of Warhammer 40,000 are eating well with numerous video games in development at a number of different studios. Alongside Creative Assembly’s new game, KingArt Games is working on Dawn of War 4, which is offering an “overwhelmingly” single-player experience for fans as well as the usual multiplayer offerings.
Additionally, Saber Interactive is working on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 as well as new content for the second game, although the third title won’t be seen for years to come. Finally, even with more Rogue Trader DLC in the works, Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is set to start its alpha on December 16, offering a smaller, more choice-filled experience for fans.
