Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 is still “years” away, says director, as Space Marine 2 still has “lots more to come”

Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 was announced last year, just months after the release of the second game. While a third game is in the works, which is aiming to be a bigger and better sequel that continues Titus’ story, the team are still working on “lots more” content for Space Marine 2.

At the time of writing, Space Marine 2 has just started its second year of free content as “fan appetite is over the top” for additional content. While one team at Saber works on the early stages of the third game, the rest of the team is designing new weapons, armour and missions for the current title.

But why did Saber Interactive announce the third game so early? Speaking to IGN, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick explained that the team confirmed a third game to “keep people aware of the fact that we’re going to continue this, that there’s going to be more coming”.

Hollis-Leick was keen to state that the creation of additional Space Marine 2 content has no effect on the quality of the third game, and vice versa. While the creative director explained that “there’s lots more to come” for the second game, they also explained that the two titles are “definitely not competing for resources” at Saber Interactive, especially as it will be years until the sequel releases.

“Announcing a third game doesn’t in any way mean that we’re not going to continue creating content for the existing game,” Hollis-Leick said. “The thing is the development cycles for these projects are long. For Space Marine 2 it was something like four years. And so, for Space Marine 3 it’s going to be the same.”

With this in mind, we likely won’t see Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 until 2028 or 2029, although it does sound like even more content will be coming to the second game after this current additional year of content wraps up.

In all honesty, this isn’t too surprising considering the massive support that Saber Interactive afforded to the team’s last game: World War Z. Built on the very same Swarm Engine, the zombie co-op game is still receiving updates to this day with a new update released on September 25, 2025.

It’s clear that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 will be another mega hit for Saber Interactive and Games Workshop when the title eventually launches, and Space Marine 2 will continue to be serviced even longer than the studio has officially announced.

While fans wait very patiently for the next game in the series, there are a number of other 40K titles in the works, although the exciting Warhammer MMO has just been scrapped. Launching next year, KingArt Games’ Dawn of War 4 releases on PC, brining back Relic Entertainment’s RTS series with a gorgeous new-but-old look and a large selection of missions to play through.
