While Helldivers 2 is currently going through “many more months” of patches to improve the co-op game’s stability and performance, PlayStation parent company Sony’s is “extremely” happy with the continued success of Arrowhead’s live-service multiplayer game.
As Sony lambasts its own acquisition of Destiny 2 developer Bungie due to massively missed sales and user expectations, the company has praised Helldivers 2 for its continued success, largely following the game’s huge Xbox launch earlier this year.
In Sony’s recent Q2 FY2025 report, available to read here, the company praised the game for continuing to bring in new players on all platforms, as well as its high user retention for players across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
This is in drastic comparison to Bungie’s Destiny 2 which Sony explains has resulted in a “downwardly revised the business projection for the time being” which has caused the company to record “an impairment loss against a portion of the assets at Bungie”.
“On the other hand, Helldivers 2, which was also released for Xbox in August of this year, is doing extremely well, not only attracting new users on Xbox, but also seeing increased engagement from existing users on PS5 and PC. This resulted in a significant increase in sales of the title year-on-year,” Sony reported.
Arrowhead has been very honest about the game’s major issues since the release of the game’s Into the Unjust update last September. Since then, the game has suffered from a host of technical issues and balance problems which the team is continuing to address.
In October, Helldivers 2 production director Alex Bolle explained that one of the major issues with the game’s technical state was a result of the team pushing major features into release build “at the very last minute” without a lot of testing, which will no longer happen for future patches.
“For the longest time our features would be considered ready and implemented in the release build at the very last minute,” Bolle said. “We’re working with the teams to stop that.”
While patches are currently the primary focus of Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead right now, including finding a way to massively reduce the game’s PC file size, which will likely involve dropping HDD support, a return to regular content drops is also just over the horizon.
