If you’ve ever wanted to live within the world of Stardew Valley, well, that’s still not happening. However, if you’ve ever wanted to jump into the colourful world of ConcernedApe’s cutesy farming game in virtual reality, that’s actually close to becoming a reality.
Of course, it’s worth noting that there are no official plans by the game’s developers to bring Stardew Valley to VR at all. While ConcernedApe has a team of devs working on the game’s upcoming 1.7 update, which adds a new farm type, bringing the game into virtual reality is purely a fan project.
Right now, there are actually two projects that are turning Stardew Valley into a fully playable VR experience. One mod comes from GingasVR, a popular content creator and extraordinary VR developer.
“I’m turning Stardew Valley into a full 3D VR game,” the YouTube and TikTok star said in a recent video. While few people have clamoured for a VR incarnation of the cosy farming sim, the developer explained that they’ve taken a “why not” approach to the project. “Honestly, I just wanted to see if I could do it and it turned out to be really fun to play,” they told fans.
The in-development fan project takes the game’s existing assets and twists the plane of perspective, making a seamless transition from 2D to 3D VR. The plan right now is to make the project “as lightweight as possible”, allowing for as many existing Stardew mods to also be playable within this VR version without manual conversion.
Even in its early stages, the mod is already quite playable with a new VR HUD, motion-capable weapons and items, a “fake 3D rendering effect using voxels and cross-plane sprites”, and more. However, as the developer isn’t actually remaking everything in 3D, there are some issues in some areas of the map.
As we mentioned previously, though, this isn’t the only Stardew Valley VR mod in development. Another YouTuber and modder, KittyCatCasey is also working on a VR conversion mod called The Third Dimension.
Also in early stages of development, this mod is remaking a tonne of assets in 3D to ease the transition into VR. For example, polygon walls exist instead of translating existing 2D tilesets into a voxel format, which would also mean that many mods would be incompatible. Nevertheless, it’s an awesome-looking project, and both versions would be more than viable when finished and released.
Right now, it’s not clear when either project will release, but as a huge VR enjoyer, they both look fantastic. Due to the sheer potential of how It should handle mods, GingasVR’s project is a little more interesting for my wants, but both of them are fantastic.
