Saber Interactive has announced full refunds for its controversial voice pack DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
Launched alongside the game’s free Techmarine update, which added the game’s first new class as well as an additional Operation, the $4.99 Chapter Voice Pack 1 included 450 re-recorded voice lines and a unique Space Marine Head cosmetic for multiple Space Marine Chapters.
The voice lines DLC was largely criticised on launch for its poor implementation, as well as the fact that the advertised “450 voice lines” were split across multiple languages. When using the voice lines, player characters would cut back to their default lines when interacting with mission-critical items.
Following the mass controversy, Saber Interactive announced that every customer of the DLC will be refunded for failing to meet expectations. Additionally, the DLC will now be made free for everyone.
“Dear Space Marine2 players, we heard your feedback regarding the Chapter Voice Pack DLC and wanted to address it,” the developer said. “It’s obvious this DLC has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that. Delivering quality content – free or not – is a priority for us.
“This is why we’ve decided to offer a refund to all owners of the DLC, and to make it free from now on. We are currently setting up the refund with platforms owners and will come back soon with more info.”
In a recent interview, Saber CCO Tim Willits explained that the studio doesn’t want Space Marine 2 to be seen as a live-service game. While the game has seen a hefty amount of DLC after launch, the voice box DLC has been the game’s first source of real controversy.
Alongside the game’s continued updates, Saber has also continued to update the game’s extensive modding tools. Recently, the studio released map tools that allowed players to create custom levels for the game with players bringing full DOOM maps into the game.
