Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was a gangbuster success for Games Workshop, the British company behind the tabletop game. With a third game already in development, although it won’t be out for a number of years, and an ongoing event focusing on protagonist Titus, the company is still benefitting from the release of Saber Interactive’s global hit.
Nevertheless, the worldwide hype of Space Marine 2 has certainly subsided, but Games Workshop is still expecting a yearly jump in profit without the help of last year’s video game. When the title launched, Games Workshop praised the title for causing the company’s largest profits ever, but warned that “time will tell if this is temporary”.
In the latest financial trading update from the Warhammer company, Games Workshop estimated a continued rise in year-on-year pre-tax profit even without the help of a new major video game launch. Nevertheless, the company is still looking for more video game hits, especially after the recent cancellation of an official MMO.
The British tabletop game company explained that it expects revenue of £310 million for the next six months, a 15% increase over the same period last year. This would see the studio’s pre-tax profit rise from £126.8 million to £135 million.
Games Workshop expects all of this with an almost-halved licensing revenue (thanks, IGN). Last year’s Space Marine 2 ended up bringing in £30.1 million to the tabletop company in licensing revenue, although it also saw a huge spike in miniature sales as well. However, this year, the company is expecting just £16 million.
Of course, Games Workshop has a lot of other additional projects in the works that should see profits continue to rise. Alongside more video games in the works—such as KingArt Games’ Dawn of War 4, there’s also an Amazon TV series in developing starring Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill.
