A brand-new Warhammer 40K animated series is currently in production at Blur Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.
A spin-off of the studio’s Secret Level Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 episode, the upcoming animated series will be crafted through 3D animation. Dave Wilson, who directed the Secret Level episode, will direct the new animated series alongside Band of Brothers writer John Orloff.
Reported by Variety, the series will reportedly be focused on The Deathwatch, the veteran Space Marine chapter, as they take on a Xenos threat. It’s not known if the new series will also feature Space Marine 2’s Titus, although considering the popularity of the video game, it’s still likely.
The new animated series will be produced by Tim Miller, the founder of Blur Studios and director of Deadpool. Additionally, the series is produced by Henry Cavill, who is also working on Amazon’s live-action Warhammer 40K series, and will star in both shows. It’s not known if Cavill will be playing the same character across the two series.
Dave Wilson told Variety that Secret Level’s purpose was to be “a launchpad for larger stories”. Based on a number of video game properties, including Sony’s infamous Concord, the show was designed to allow for any number of animated shows. As it turns out, the extremely strong reception for the Warhammer episode allowed for Blur Studios to create an entire Warhammer 40K show.
“The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right,” the director said. “This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
At the time of writing, there is no release date for the Blur Studios animated series. However, it’s part of a number of shows based on the Warhammer 40K property. Recently, it was confirmed that horror veteran Mike Flanagan is working on the upcoming live-action series, also starring Cavill, which means the show could be more horror-focused than many first assumed.
