Helldivers 2 boss promises “a lot of Helldivers will die” as Arrowhead preps its next major update

If you thought Malevelon Creek was the height of pain in Helldivers 2, think again. As players continue through Arrowhead’s Into the Unjust campaign, the stakes are climbing even higher as the studio promises a significant increase in deaths for the game’s next major story beat.

In a recent Discord Q&A following the Christmas break, Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani confirmed that “a lot of Helldivers will die” in the next major content drop for the bombastic co-op game.

While Arrowhead knows what they will be doing for the next major story beat, the developers don’t know what the ending of that story will be. After all, Helldivers 2 is essentially a massive Dungeons & Dragons campaign with the endings of stories relying on whether players manage to actually complete major orders.

“We run like you would any role-playing game as a dungeon master,” Jorjani said. “You plan for different outcomes along a rough campaign. We know roughly where you’re gonna end up as we head into the next big update -but not the exact details.”

With this in mind, it does seem that Arrowhead is planning something big for its next campaign with the studio forecasting a lot of player deaths in the near future. Jorjani explains that this format requires the studio to “keep development open ended” as they react to the actions of players, and that’s what makes Helldivers 2 so exciting.

Jorjani also explained that no Major Order in Helldivers 2 is designed to be “mathematically impossible” following complaints about the game’s current ongoing mission. “We’ve never had an order that was mathematically impossible,” they said. “Some have been designed to be VERY hard. and sometimes the community has rallied and surprised quite a bit.”

While Helldivers 2 did stumble hard last year, Arrowhead Game Studios has done well to bring the game back to the status that it deserves. After the game’s massive file size reduction and a host of technical fixes, which are still ongoing, the game has now returned to its regular content structure.

We have no idea what’s coming to Helldivers 2 in the future, but it does seem that a new Into the Unjust campaign against the Illuminate is on the table.
