Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2 is currently in the midst of a major maintenance cycle with “many more months” of patches planned to bring the game up to snuff. As the studio weighs up the possibility of abandoning physical hard drives to crush the game’s massive file size and fixes countless bugs, new features are low on the priority list.
After Arrowhead already turned down the possibility of higher player-counts in missions as they would tank performance further, CEO Shams Jorjani has discussed the possibility of cross-progression being added to the game in a future update.
Currently, Helldivers 2 has full cross-play across Xbox Series, PlayStation 5 and PC with everyone able to play together. However, if a player jumps from one platform to another—say they want to experience mods on PC—they have to start the game all over again.
Speaking to fans on Discord, Jorjani explaiend that the team wants to add cross-progression, but a major feature like that is low-priority compared to continued fixes and new warbonds. “fwiw [for what it’s worth we’d love to add cross platform progression,” the CEO said, “but other things take priority.”
Jorjani explained that the focus right now is on continued patches and getting back to the game’s usual flow of new content. However, when the flow of content returns, players will also be treated to new performance improvements and glitch fixes with the CEO promising there’s “more to come as we get back to regular content”.
Arrowhead’s work on bringing Helldivers 2 up to scratch is far from finished, but players are already reporting much improved gameplay following the release of its latest patch. (Personally, I’m waiting until I can call a stratagem on a cave mission and actually have it land where I called it!)
It’s not very often we see games actively pause their content—which players spend money on—to do such heavy maintenance behind the scenes. Even at its most broken, HD2 is still a tonne of fun, but it’ll be heaps more fun when the game is actually working as intended.
