Toby Fox’s Undertale was already a pretty big hit, but the latest release of Deltarune has eclipsed the indie developer’s prior release by a country mile. No, by a light-year. While Deltarune’s original launch performed well by all metrics, the release of its Chapter 5 update has seen a meteoric rise in players.
When Deltarune saw its initial launch on June 30, 2025, the game saw a peak of 13,319 players on Steam. This was passed for the first time on June 15, 2026 as players prepared for the game’s then-upcoming update with 13,668 players jumping into the indie RPG.
Now, I’m not one to focus too much on player counts. In fact, when Arc Raiders was significantly dropping players, we released an article about why that’s not necessarily the death spiral many claim it to be. However, it’s very, very, very rare to see such an astronomical rise in player counts like Deltarune has seen.
Following the release of Deltarune Chapter 5 on June 24, 2026, Tony Fox’s indie darling has climbed to a massive peak of 290,973 concurrent players. That means over a quarter-of-a-million players jumping into the game at the same time. Of course, this doesn’t count the players on other platforms, such as Nintendo Switch 2 where the game is also incredibly popular.
By my calculations, that meteoric rise is a massive 2085% jump from the game’s initial peak a year ago. Yeah, 2085%. (Well, it’s actually 2084.645% but who’s counting? Oh, me?) And that’s just for Chapter 5! Who knows what titanic player counts the next two chapters will see?
For comparison, and just for fun not any social media wah-wah-wah, Undertale’s player counts on Steam, which was its primary platform, only ever saw a peak of 11,071 players. Doing the percentage thing again, Deltarune’s peak has seen a 2528% increase over Undertale’s peak.
Nevertheless, Toby Fox’s game became a juggernaut success, a cultural icon of gaming. It’s seen concerts, merchandise, ports to every platform under the sun, and a loving community. Nevertheless, more people are buying and playingDeltarune.
As Toby Fox and crew continues work on Deltarune, the ongoing RPG may be finished by this time next year. Just weeks ago, Fox confirmed that development is “going quite fast” with Chapter 6 nearing the end of work and Chapter 7 aiming to start development within 2026. It’s been a decade-long journey, but it may actually be ending sooner than you think.
Deltarune Chapter 5 is out right now and is available on PC, MacOS, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4 and PS5.
