Square Enix’s impressive Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy concludes next year with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. As fans await the trilogy’s finale, director Naoki Hamaguchi has been keen to state that the remake will be adapting the original game’s ending as fans expect it. However, the original ending isn’t all that’s being adapted.
Without spoiling anything, Hamaguchi recently teased that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will also adapt the wider FF7 anthology. Alongside the prequel Crisis Core, which has already been worked into the remake trilogy at points, Hamaguchi noted that the team can’t avoid Advent Children and Crisis Core.
Speaking to YouTuber Ashif’s Release Notes, the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director directly addressed the fan theories surrounding the possibility of an Advent Children adaptation. “I see a great deal of that discussion,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of people discusisng and speculating off the back of interviews with myself and Kitase-san. ‘Is the ending of this going to to connect to Advent Children?’”
Hamaguchi has not outright confirmed anything at this point, but the director teased that they are at least taking Advent Children into account. “I don’t want to sit here and say, ‘it connects to this, it connects to that’. But obviously, there are a lot of other titles within the [FF]7 universe. So, we’re talking about Advent Children, we’re talking about Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core. And we want to bring all of those in and make sure we’re not leaving those out.”
The director made sure to note that this doesn’t mean the ending of Revelation will see a full adaptation of Advent Children. “Once we have all of those in place, we’re looking towards the ending,” he said. “And then the question is, what kind of ending are we going to head for in Revelation that still has those ties? And I think that’s something that I really hope players will look forward to finding out.”
As spotted by IGN, Hamaguchi also addressed the possibility of bringing in the “overarching universe” of Final Fantasy 7 for the new game. In an interview with Automaton, the director notes the same three games “not just Advent Children, but also Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core.”
“We’re not denying the possibility of the ending tying into FFVII AC, but rather, we’re saying that FFVII AC has just been incorporated into the overarching FFVII remake series, including the ending. However, I won’t comment on whether the ending is positioned to lead into it,” he said.
It’s also interesting to note that these stories will not be adapted in any DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. While Hamaguchi is still playing coy with DLC discussions, despite official leaks claiming there will be multiple story expansions, the director has confirmed that any story DLCs will be entirely new stories, not rehashes of existing ones.
This means that any links to Advent Children and other stories that are already a part of the Final Fantasy 7 anthology will be a part of Revelation itself. How that will play out for Dirge of Cerberus, a canon sequel to Advent Children, is unknown and a little confusing, but it won’t be long until we get to see it play out.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation releases on Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and PS5 sometime in Spring 2027.
